Authority files are a standardized way of citing names of people, families, organizations and places. They are separate searchable databases containing authority records many of which are linked to related archival descriptions in the catalogue database. By searching the authority files it is possible to find an authority record and retrieve all the catalogue descriptions linked to it. This is useful for bringing together records created by the same person, family or organization but which are described in different collections, e.g., the Norwich Society, or relating to the same family or place but which have variant spellings, e.g., Le Strange or L'Estrange, Strumpshaugh or Strumpshaw.
An authority record comprises the authorized form of name, usually supported by sufficient information to ensure reliable recognition and use of such a name.
NROCAT uses two Authority Files: Names and Places.
-
Names covers people, families and organizations. It is not a general index to personal names. Many entries include some biographical or administrative information. Search the Names Authority File.
-
Places covers buildings, streets, hamlets, parishes, counties, and geographical features. Some entries include grid references and some historical background. Search the Places Authority File.
